Jarek Kurnitski on Tallinna Tehnikaülikooli professor ja oma erialaorganisatsiooni REHVA (Euroopa kütte, ventilatsiooni ja jahutuse erialaühenduste katusorganisatsioon) asepresident. Alates aprillist 2012 juhib Jarek liginullenergiahoonete nZEB uurimisgruppi TTÜ-s. Enne ühinemist TTÜ-ga töötas Jarek Soome Innovatsioonifondis SITRA, kus ta viis läbi Energiaprogrammi 2009-2012. Jarek on üks Euroopa juhtivatest teadlastest hoonete energiatõhususe ja sisekliima valdkonnas, keda on tunnustatud Euroopa ja Skandinaavia erialaorganisatsioonide REHVA ja SCANVAC teadusauhindadega ning tema publikatsioonid hõlmavad üle 300 teadusliku ja rakendusliku väljaande. Jarek olnud keskne autor Eesti ja Soome energiatõhususe miinimumnõuete ja arvutusmetoodika väljatöötamisel. Praegu juhib ta REHVA liginullenergiahoonete nZEB töörühma, mis töötab välja tehnilisi aluseid Hoonete energitõhususdirektiivi liginullenergianõuete rahvuslikuks implementeerimiseks.

Throughout his career he has worked in academic research and in many national and international committees and possesses extensive experience in indoor climate and energy performance of buildings, ventilation and air conditioning as well as building physics, mold and moisture safety, sustainability and building simulation. His positions have included deep involvement in the work to improve the energy efficiency of the built environment and its part in national climate goals as well as the improvement of competitiveness and the development of national strategies and regulation in two countries, in Estonia and Finland.

Previously Jarek has led the Indoor Climate and Energy Performance research for more than ten years at Aalto University, where he was research manager from 2001–2009. This multidisciplinary research group successfully contributed to many EU-projects and he has actively participated in the working groups of European Standardisation Organisation CEN to develop European standards for the implementation of Energy Performance in Buildings Directive, in relation to indoor climate and ventilation.

Jarek is a REHVA (Federation of European Heating and Air-Conditioning Associations) and SCANVAC (Scandinavian Federation of Heating, Ventilation and Sanitary Engineering Associations) young scientist awardee. The list of his publications includes more than 350 items of which about 60 articles in international journals with strict referee practice, about 10 book contributions and 100 in international conferences.

Jarek has been working in many expert working groups, in CEN, WHO, CIB, ISIAQ and REHVA, preparing international evidence based guidelines, standards and textbooks for healthy, comfortable and energy efficient buildings. He is one of the developers of the well known Finnish Indoor Climate Classification. His work for WHO resulted in WHO guidelines for indoor air quality, dampness and mould, published by World Health Organization in 2009.

Finnish Classification of Indoor Environment 2008 is arguably the most advanced and widely referred guideline for good indoor environment in developed world. To control the construction process, Finnish Healthy Construction Criteria was developed under his leadership. This document integrates the Classification of Indoor Environment into the construction process and gives further specification for the construction by utilizing both performance based and descriptive approaches. Healthy Construction Criteria was utilized when he was secretary of the CIB and ISIAQ’s joint Task Group Performance Criteria for Health and Comfort of Buildings, resulting in CIB guideline in 2003.

As an acknowledgement of his emerging competence, he has been a member on sustainable development design competition juries and expert bodies, such as Helsinki Central Library, Low2No and Viikki Synergy in Helsinki.

In the position in SITRA 2009-2012, Jarek was responsible for R&D projects in the Energy Programme. These include energy performance and indoor climate improvements both in new and existing buildings, energy & emission issues in urban planning, national emission reductions, development of codes and guidelines etc. The programme is making strong effort to provide, apply and disseminate knowledge in many fields of energy performance. SITRA, the Finnish Innovation Fund is an independent public fund which under the supervision of the Finnish Parliament promotes the welfare of Finnish society. SITRA’s mission is to promote stable and balanced development in Finland, the qualitative and quantitative growth of its economy and its international competitiveness and co-operation. Its aim is to help Finland prosper as global pioneer in systemic changes that generate well-being. It is an enabler of necessary changes. SITRA’s operations are funded with endowment capital and returns from capital investments.

Since 2001 to 2009 Jarek was the research manager in the HVAC-technology (former Laboratory of Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) at Aalto University (former Helsinki University of Technology), Finland. Jarek was responsible leader for majority of all research projects in the unit with personnel of app 25 persons from which app 15 in his research group. He was appointed as adjunct professor for 2005–2010. The multidisciplinary research group under his supervision has conducted studies related to indoor climate, health and comfort, energy performance and HVAC-system performance of buildings. These have included simultaneous field measurements of building performance and indoor climate, energy simulations and modeling of building physics and HVAC-components and systems. The laboratory has successfully contributed to many EU-projects in the area of indoor environment and energy efficiency of buildings, including under his leadership HOPE, ETIAQ, ENVIE, Square, AdVent and ThermCo. He is actively participated in the working groups of European Standardization Organization (CEN) to develop European standards for implementation of Energy Performance in Buildings Directive, as regards indoor climate and ventilation standards, such as EN 15241, EN 15242, EN 15243, EN 15251 and EN 13779.

About 40 national and international research projects in the area of Indoor Climate, Ventilation, Energy Performance, Building Physics and Building Simulation, between 1995-2009.
Responsible leader in large scale multi- and interdisciplinary research projects, since 2001. Some examples of most ambitious research projects:
• Productive Office 2005 (TT2005, 2001-2004) that was the largest research project in construction sector in Finland (2 M€, founded by National technology agency Tekes and by 27 companies and organizations). Ten research institutions from Finland participated into the project that cooperated with US, Denmark, UK and Singapore. This project developed quantitative relations for indoor climate parameters and productivity in office type of work.
• Refurbishment of Existing Ventilation and Air-Conditioning Systems (MIV 2003-2005). In this project strongly supported by HVAC industry (0.7 M€, 3 research institutions, funding by 20 companies and Tekes), new refurbishment methods were developed for upgrading old ventilation and air conditioning systems to the level corresponding to new buildings.
• Life Cycle Models in Building Services (CubeNet 2005-2007). This project (1.1 M€, 4 research institutions, founded by Tekes and 16 companies) developed new tools and methods for specification and verification of indoor climate and energy performance targets, comparison of procurement models and verifications in operation phase useful for service providers acting in construction projects with long term contracts typically including design, installation and maintenance as one package.
• Sustainable Energy (KesEn 2008-2010) which wa the largest research project in energy performance of buildings in Finland (1,2 M€, 3 research institutions, founded by Tekes and 19 companies and organizations). This project studied energy performance of buildings from the respect of demand side management, distributed generation and optimal performance of the whole energy system. Most cost-efficient measures for CO2 reductions were shown and pre-normative work for new building regulations were conducted.

Additional career information
Jarek Kurnitski is professor at Tallinn University of Technology (TUT), where since April 2012 he is the leader of Nearly Zero Energy Buildings nZEB research group of about 10 persons. From Aug 1, 2013 Jarek was invited to Aalto University, where he started as adjunct professor with 40% load and with the intention to found a joint research group of two universities. Before joining TUT Jarek worked for SITRA, the Finnish Innovation Fund, where he conducted the Energy Programme 2009–2012. Jarek is editorial board member of Energy & Buildings and Building Physics journals and The REHVA European HVAC Journal that are leading international scientific and professional journals in the domain. He has deep involvement in the European professional HVAC organization REHVA with leading role in the preparation of technical definitions for nearly zero energy buildings. As one of leading European experts in energy performance of buildings, he has recognized with scientific awards from professional associations REHVA and SCANVAC and his list of publications includes more than 350 items. Jarek has been deeply involved in the work to improve the energy efficiency of the built environment in two countries, he has developed energy calculation frames for present Estonian and Finnish energy performance regulations. He is currently chairing the REHVA Task Force on Nearly Zero Energy Buildings nZEB preparing technical bases for uniformed EPBD implementation.

Throughout his career he has worked in academic research and in many national and international committees and possesses extensive experience in indoor climate and energy performance of buildings, ventilation and air conditioning as well as building physics, mold and moisture safety, sustainability and building simulation. His positions have included deep involvement in the work to improve the energy efficiency of the built environment and its part in national climate goals as well as the improvement of competitiveness and the development of national strategies and regulation in two countries, in Estonia and Finland.

Previously Jarek has led the Indoor Climate and Energy Performance research for more than ten years at Aalto University, where he was research manager from 2001–2009. This multidisciplinary research group successfully contributed to many EU-projects and he has actively participated in the working groups of European Standardisation Organisation CEN to develop European standards for the implementation of Energy Performance in Buildings Directive, in relation to indoor climate and ventilation.

Jarek is a REHVA (Federation of European Heating and Air-Conditioning Associations) and SCANVAC (Scandinavian Federation of Heating, Ventilation and Sanitary Engineering Associations) young scientist awardee. The list of his publications includes more than 350 items of which about 60 articles in international journals with strict referee practice, about 10 book contributions and 100 in international conferences.

Jarek has been working in many expert working groups, in CEN, WHO, CIB, ISIAQ and REHVA, preparing international evidence based guidelines, standards and textbooks for healthy, comfortable and energy efficient buildings. He is one of the developers of the well known Finnish Indoor Climate Classification. His work for WHO resulted in WHO guidelines for indoor air quality, dampness and mould, published by World Health Organization in 2009.

Finnish Classification of Indoor Environment 2008 is arguably the most advanced and widely referred guideline for good indoor environment in developed world. To control the construction process, Finnish Healthy Construction Criteria was developed under his leadership. This document integrates the Classification of Indoor Environment into the construction process and gives further specification for the construction by utilizing both performance based and descriptive approaches. Healthy Construction Criteria was utilized when he was secretary of the CIB and ISIAQ’s joint Task Group Performance Criteria for Health and Comfort of Buildings, resulting in CIB guideline in 2003.

As an acknowledgement of his emerging competence, he has been a member on sustainable development design competition juries and expert bodies, such as Helsinki Central Library, Low2No and Viikki Synergy in Helsinki.

In the position in SITRA 2009-2012, Jarek was responsible for R&D projects in the Energy Programme. These include energy performance and indoor climate improvements both in new and existing buildings, energy & emission issues in urban planning, national emission reductions, development of codes and guidelines etc. The programme is making strong effort to provide, apply and disseminate knowledge in many fields of energy performance. SITRA, the Finnish Innovation Fund is an independent public fund which under the supervision of the Finnish Parliament promotes the welfare of Finnish society. SITRA’s mission is to promote stable and balanced development in Finland, the qualitative and quantitative growth of its economy and its international competitiveness and co-operation. Its aim is to help Finland prosper as global pioneer in systemic changes that generate well-being. It is an enabler of necessary changes. SITRA’s operations are funded with endowment capital and returns from capital investments.

Since 2001 to 2009 Jarek was the research manager in the HVAC-technology (former Laboratory of Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) at Aalto University (former Helsinki University of Technology), Finland. Jarek was responsible leader for majority of all research projects in the unit with personnel of app 25 persons from which app 15 in his research group. He was appointed as adjunct professor for 2005–2010. The multidisciplinary research group under his supervision has conducted studies related to indoor climate, health and comfort, energy performance and HVAC-system performance of buildings. These have included simultaneous field measurements of building performance and indoor climate, energy simulations and modeling of building physics and HVAC-components and systems. The laboratory has successfully contributed to many EU-projects in the area of indoor environment and energy efficiency of buildings, including under his leadership HOPE, ETIAQ, ENVIE, Square, AdVent and ThermCo. He is actively participated in the working groups of European Standardization Organization (CEN) to develop European standards for implementation of Energy Performance in Buildings Directive, as regards indoor climate and ventilation standards, such as EN 15241, EN 15242, EN 15243, EN 15251 and EN 13779.

About 40 national and international research projects in the area of Indoor Climate, Ventilation, Energy Performance, Building Physics and Building Simulation, between 1995-2009.
Responsible leader in large scale multi- and interdisciplinary research projects, since 2001. Some examples of most ambitious research projects:
• Productive Office 2005 (TT2005, 2001-2004) that was the largest research project in construction sector in Finland (2 M€, founded by National technology agency Tekes and by 27 companies and organizations). Ten research institutions from Finland participated into the project that cooperated with US, Denmark, UK and Singapore. This project developed quantitative relations for indoor climate parameters and productivity in office type of work.
• Refurbishment of Existing Ventilation and Air-Conditioning Systems (MIV 2003-2005). In this project strongly supported by HVAC industry (0.7 M€, 3 research institutions, funding by 20 companies and Tekes), new refurbishment methods were developed for upgrading old ventilation and air conditioning systems to the level corresponding to new buildings.
• Life Cycle Models in Building Services (CubeNet 2005-2007). This project (1.1 M€, 4 research institutions, founded by Tekes and 16 companies) developed new tools and methods for specification and verification of indoor climate and energy performance targets, comparison of procurement models and verifications in operation phase useful for service providers acting in construction projects with long term contracts typically including design, installation and maintenance as one package.
• Sustainable Energy (KesEn 2008-2010) which wa the largest research project in energy performance of buildings in Finland (1,2 M€, 3 research institutions, founded by Tekes and 19 companies and organizations). This project studied energy performance of buildings from the respect of demand side management, distributed generation and optimal performance of the whole energy system. Most cost-efficient measures for CO2 reductions were shown and pre-normative work for new building regulations were conducted.
Numerous product development projects for HVAC-manufactures and construction companies:
• Improving the performance of Rettig’s radiators and developing new low-temperature combined radiator and floor heating system for Rettig
• Developing air jet calculation models for Halton’s supply air devices
• Testing, modeling and developing new solutions for Norpe’s refrigerated display cabinets
• Developing new building service concepts and solutions for construction companies YIT and Skanska
