Areas of special interest and accomplishments
My primary research interests include the design and planning/scheduling of waste management systems in open pit mines. In many cases, mine wastes, whether they be run of mine solid wastes or mine tailings, the rock materials have specific chemical attributes that make them particularly susceptible to a naturally occurring weathering process where carbon dioxide is converted to calcium carbonate. This process, mineral carbonation, even in a passive pressure and temperature setting effectively captures and retains CO2 in a mineral form. My research in this area included modeling the in situ sequestration potential (SP value) of these materials prior to the development of an ore-based mine plan and schedule. These SP values are predicted using simple isotope and X-ray analysis methods and bulk sequestration capacity can be estimated using indicator and ordinary kriging methods for the entire Life-of-Mine plan.
