Eesti Biokeskuse (EBK) DNA pank on unikaalne teaduskollektsioon, mis koosneb kaht tüüpi säilitusühikutest. Esimene neist hõlmab inimese DNA proove, mis pärinevad erinevatelt rahvastelt üle kogu maailma. Teaduskollektsioonis on esindatud järgmised geograafilised piirkonnad: Põhja-Aafrika, Lääne- ja Ida-Euroopa, Lähis-Ida, Kesk-Aasia, Kaukaasia, Siber, Lõuna- ja Kagu Aasia, Põhja- ja Lõuna-Ameerika. Loetelus on ligikaudu 30 000 indiviidi DNA umbes 150 erinevast populatsioonist. Kõige enam – umbes 1000 DNA prooviga - on kollektsioonis esindatud eestlased. Inimese geneetilise mitmekesisuse uurimise seisukohalt on oluline rõhutada, et kollektsiooni kuulub ka sajakonna India populatsiooni ja hõimurahva DNA proovi, samuti Siberi ja Ameerika põlisrahvaste proove. Kollektsioonile loob lisaväärtuse iga DNA proovi annetanud indiviidi kohta talletatud info tema päritolu ning keelelise ja kultuurilise tausta kohta. www.ebc.ee/free_data/Samples.png Teise osa säilitusühikutest moodustab kollektsioonil põhineva teadustöö alusel koostatud ja pidevalt täienev digitaalne andmebaas. EBK andmebaas sisaldab andmeid rohkem kui 4000 erineva geograafilise, keelelise ja kultuurilise taustaga inimese genoomi poole miljoni informatiivse nukleotiidipositsiooni kohta. Ligikaudu 450 inimese jaoks (2-3 indiviidi populatsiooni kohta) on andmebaasis informatsioon kogu nende genoomijärjestuse ulatuses. Samuti on EBK andmebaasis talletatud varieeruvusinfo praktiliselt kõikide kollektsioonis olevate proovide emaliinis päranduva mitokondriaalse DNA ja ligikaudu 10000 proovi isaliinis päranduva Y kromosoomi markerite kohta. Kollektsioonist saadud andmeid kasutatakse inimese tänase geneetilise mitmekesisuse ja selle kujunemisloo uurimisel. Teaduskollektsiooni alusel valminud uurimistööd on andnud teadmisi inimese demograafilise ajaloo globaalsetele võtmeküsimustele ja regionaalsetele iseärasustele ning aidanud mõista, kuidas kulges maailma asustamine anatoomiliselt moodsa inimese poolt ajas ja ruumis.
The DNA bank of the Estonian Biocentre (EBC) is a unique scientific collection consisting of two types of stored items. The first are human DNA samples from various peoples across the world. The following geographic regions are represented in the scientific collection: North Africa, West and East Europe, Near East, Central Asia, Caucasus, Siberia, South and Southeast Asia, North and South America. The list includes DNA from approximately 30,000 individuals from about 150 different populations. The population represented by the largest number of samples – about 1,000 – in the collection is Estonians. From the point of view of studying human genetic diversity it is important to stress that the collection also includes DNA samples from about one hundred Indian populations and tribes as well as samples from the native peoples of Siberia and America. Additional value for the collection is created by the information about the origin and the linguistic and cultural background stored about every individual who has donated a DNA sample. www.ebc.ee/free_data/Samples.png The other part of stored items comprises the digital database that is compiled based on the research carried out using the collection, and is constantly expanded. The EBC database contains data for half a million informative nucleotide positions from the genomes of over 4,000 individuals of various geographic, linguistic and cultural backgrounds. For approximately 450 people (2-3 individuals per population), the database contains information for their entire genomic sequence. The EBC database also stores information on the variation of maternally and paternally inherited markers widely used in population genetic studies – mitochondrial DNA and the Y chromosome. Data from the collection are used to study present human genetic diversity and its formation. Research projects completed based on the scientific collection have provided knowledge of global key questions as well as regional peculiarities of human demographic history and have helped to understand how the colonisation of the world by anatomically modern humans progressed in space and time.

EBK evolutsioonibioloogia töögrupp on koos TÜ evolutsioonibioloogia õppetooliga olnud anatoomiliselt moodsa inimese geneetilise mitmekesisuse ja demograafilise ajaloo uurimise suunal tegev alates 1990-ndatest aastatest. Alguse sai see huvist eestlaste geneetilise päritolu vastu. Õige pea tingis vajadus saadud andmete konteksti panemiseks laiendada uurimisspektrit naaberpopulatsioonidele ja kaugemalegi. Üheks esimeseks umbes 100 eestlase DNA proovile lisandunud populatsiooniks kollektsioonis olid armeenlased. 1997 a. alustati EBKs süstemaatiliselt eestlaste ja teiste rahvaste DNA kogumisega teaduskollektsiooni. Valdav enamus proove on meie kollektsiooni jõudnud EBK rahvusvahelise koostöö raames tänu arvukatele koostööpartneritele kõikjalt maailmast. EBK huvi ja tegevusvaldkonna laienemine globaalsematele probleemidele on omakorda tinginud koostööpartnerite ringi avardumise ja teaduskollektsiooni mitmekesistumise. The evolutionary biology group of the EBC together with the Department of Evolutionary Biology of the University of Tartu has been active in studying the genetic diversity and demographic history of modern humans since the 1990s. It began with an interest in the genetic origin of Estonians. Very soon the need to put gathered data into context precipitated an expansion of the study spectre to neighbouring populations and further. One of the first populations added to the collection of about 100 Estonian DNA samples was Armenians. In 1997, the EBC began to systematically collect the DNA of Estonians and other peoples into the scientific collection. The majority of samples have been added to our collection through international collaboration of the EBC, thanks to numerous partners from across the world. The expansion of the interest and activity of the EBC to more global problems has in its turn widened the circle of collaborators and diversified the scientific collection.

EBK teaduskollektsiooni kasutamise põhirõhk on teadustööl. Igapäevaselt kasutavad kollektsiooni EBK ja TÜ evolutsioonilise bioloogia õppetooli ja TÜ Eesti Geenivaramu töötajad, sh teadurid, külalisteadlased ja kraadiõppurid. Asutusesiseseid kollektsioonikasutajaid on ligikaudu 30. Teaduskollektsioon on EBK ja TÜ evolutsioonilise bioloogia õppetoolis tehtava populatsioonigeneetiliste uurimistööde tähtsaim allikmaterjal ning leiab aktiivset kasutust õppe- ja teadustöös. Igal aastal avaldatab EBK teaduskollektsiooniga tehtud uurimistöö põhjal keskmiselt 16 teadusartiklit. Läbi aastate on teaduskollektsioonil põhineva teadustöö alusel kaitstud arvukalt magistri- ja doktoritöid. Erialaliselt on ennast täiendanud hulgaliselt noorteadlasi erinevatest teadusasutustest (Venemaa, Horvaatia, Rootsi, Gruusia, Iisrael, Armeenia, Ameerika Ühendriigid, India, Bangladesh, Ukraina, Valgevene). Keskeltläbi külastab Eesti Biokeskust 11 välisteadlast aastas. Teaduskollektsiooni DNA proove saavad EBK partnerid koostööprojektide raames kohapeal kasutada. Digitaalse andmebaasi avaldatud andmed (http://evolbio.ut.ee/) on avalikud ja kõigile tasuta kättesaadavad.
The main use of the EBC scientific collection is for research. The collection is used daily by the employees of EBC, the UT Department of Evolutionary Biology and the UT Estonian Genome Center, including researchers, visiting scholars and graduate students. There are around 30 users of the collection within the institution. The scientific collection is the primary source material for the population genetic studies carried out in EBC and the UT Department of Evolutionary Biology and is actively used in teaching and research. Every year EBC publishes on average 16 scientific articles based on research on the scientific collection. For years, numerous master and doctoral dissertations have been written based on research on the scientific collection. Many young researchers from various scientific institutions (from Russia, Croatia, Sweden, Georgia, Israel, Armenia, the United States, India, Bangladesh, Ukraine, Belarus) have received specialised training. On average, the Estonian Biocentre is visited by 11 international scholars per year. Partners of EBC can use the DNA samples of the scientific collection on site for ongoing collaborative projects. Published data of the digital database (http://evolbio.ut.ee/) are public and freely accessible to all.

The data comprise genetic sequences and collections of genetic variants that are stored locally on a storage medium of which backups are made periodically. Published data gathered from the scientific collection are public and freely accessible to everyone on the webpage http://evolbio.ut.ee/. The rules for using the published data are declared on the evolbio.ut.ee homepage, stating that using the data, the article these data were first published in must be referenced. The collection of biological samples takes place in accordance with the requirements of the Research Ethics Committee of the University of Tartu and has been approved by the committee. The collection of biological samples is constantly being expanded and forms the basis of both local and international scientific collaboration.
