The use of natural materials and natural material know-how is strong and traditional both in Finland and Estonia. Because of the different history and other background there are variations in using the natural materials between these two countries. The strong traditional background, different methods and materials and common interest in utilising natural materials forms a fertile ground for a joint project. It is necessary to increase the use of local natural materials because they are ecological, esthetic, easily recyclable, nontoxic, renewable materials and the use of local natural materials support the employment. These actions promote sustainable development. In addition the natural material know-how is cultural heritage which should be maintained and transferred to next generations. Otherwise it will dissapear with the old experts. On the other hand there is a need to develop new methods to work natural materials in order to create innovations and modern techniques.
