Professor of Interaction Design at Tallinn University’s School of Digital Technology, David received his PhD on Human-Computer Interaction in 1998 at the University of Portsmouth in United Kingdom. He concluded his post-doc research at Michigan State University as a member of the team developing the Mobile Infosphere at the Media Interfaces & Network Design Laboratory.

David’s main research interest is design theory and methodology. He heads the academic area of Human-Computer Interaction and a Master’s on Human-Computer Interaction. He is also an active supervisor currently mentoring one post-doc researcher, and tutoring nine doctoral students. David’s teaching duties include, among other, a master level course on Theoretical Foundations of HCI and a doctoral level course on Research Trends in HCI.

He participated in R&D projects such as the LLP KA3 funded CoCreat (leading the local team), an FP7 funded Learning Layers (as a team member) the ETAG funded LearnMix (as Principal Investigator), a project with a strong emphasis on distributed user interfaces, and a NordPlus funded Collective Dreaming, a project on end-user design. He successfully co-submitted three COST Action proposals where HCI and Interaction Design play a significant role.

David is an active member of ACM SIGCHI and IEEE’s Computer Society. David chairs the local ACM SIGCHI chapter promoting the field in Estonian society since 2011. Together with industry partners, he organises Estonia’s yearly World Usability Day and Global Accessibility Awareness Day events, which regularly brings together over 300 participants, and he also promotes bi-monthly events specially designed to bring HCI to the fore.

He also actively participates in cooperation projects in developing countries. David lead the team setting-up the first university in Cape Verde, and was part of the team kick-starting a university in central Mozambique. Currently he is actively involved in deploying the first Masters in Software Engineering in Kabul, Afghanistan, where he also acts as a consultant for the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, funded by the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and USAID.
