Dr. Pia Tikka, is a professional filmmaker and EU Mobilitas Research Professor holding EU Mobilitas Plus Top Researcher Grant (2017-2022) at the Baltic Film, Media, Arts and Communication School (BFM) and MEDIT Centre of Excellence, Tallinn University. She holds the honorary titles of Adjunct Professor of New Narrative Media at the University of Lapland, and Fellow of Life in the Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image.
A professional filmmaker with M.A. cinematographer (1996) and Doctor of Arts in cinematography (2008, Aalto University),her previous work history includes ten years as a graphic designer (1979-1989). She has directed feature films Daughters of Yemanjá (Brazil-Finland 1996) and Sand Bride (Finland 1998), as well as several short films, music videos, and documentaries, interactive narrative cinematic systems, as well as has feature film projects in development. She has worked in numerous international feature film productions, including several films by Mika Kaurismäki and The Night on Earth by Jim Jarmusch.
In the field of interactive media, she is the author Enactive Cinema: Simulatorium Eisensteinense (2008), director of the Enactive Cinema Installation Obsession (2005) awarded with Möbius Prix Nordic prize, and co-author of interactive film-game The Third Woman exhibited in Galapagos Art Space, NY (2011). She is a founding member of research project Enactive Media (2009-2011), and acted as Director in Crucible Studio, Department of Media, Aalto University (2014-2017).
In the field of neurosciences, she is the founder and principal investigator of NeuroCine research project (2010 – ongoing). She represented the School of ARTS as a filmmaker and researcher in the multidisciplinary neuroscience research project aivoAALTO (2009-2016), Aalto University, and acted as a core member of the directory group of the project (2010-2014). Her research in neurocinematics is focusing on studying the neural basis of storytelling and creative imagination. She has contributed to the neuroeconomics as a member of the advisory board in NeuroService research project at the Laurea University of Applied Sciences, funded by Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation (2014–2015).
Currently at TLU, her ENACTIVE VIRTUALITY research group studies the viewer’s experience of co-presence emerging in facial encounter with an enactive screen character: Enactive co-presence in narrative virtual reality - a triadic interaction model.
