Daniele Monticelli Daniele Monticelli hold an MA degree in Philosophy (University of Milano, 1995), a PhD (in Semiotics University of Tartu, 2008) and has been a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Comparative Literature of Yale University (2013/14). He is currently a Professor of Semiotics and Translation Studies at Tallinn University, where he he teaches a range of subjects in semiotics, translation, philosophy of language, literature, film and visual culture and research seminars for MA and PhD students. Monticelli’s research bridges translation history, comparative literature, semiotics and contemporary critical theory. More recently his work has focused on the potentialities and constraints of translation in contexts of radical cultural and social change – the construction and deconstruction of national identities in Central and Eastern Europe at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, censorship and dissidence under communism and contemporary debates on world literature and translation. Most recently he led the ETAG project “Translation in History, Estonia 1850–2010” (PI) and co‑designed the Estonian Translation Database and the Network of Estonian Translated Literature; he curated the related public exhibition and has developed corpus‑based and network methods for translation history. Another focus of his research has been later Juri Lotman’s works with particular attention to the notions of translation, semiosphere, history and unpredictability. Monticelli has published widely on translation, censorship, semiotic and critical theory, philosophy of literature. He is the co-editor of the collective volumes and special issues “Between Cultures and Texts. Itineraries in Translation History” (2011), “Testo e metodo. Prospettive teoriche sulla letteratura italiana” (2011), “L’incipit et l’explicit. Perpectives interdisciplinaires” (2017), “Italianistica 2.0 Tradizione e innovazione” (2020) “Translation Under Communism” (2021), “the Routledge Handbook of the History of Translation Studies” (2024), “Semiotics of conflict. A Lotmanian perspective” (2024). His monograph on literary translation in Estonia (c.1900) is forthcoming (2026). Monticelli have authored several literary translations from Estonian into Italian.
