Recognition and Diffusion of Research (Pietarinen)
Pietarinen has published over 150 refereed papers in international journals, books and collections in the areas of philosophy of science, philosophy of language, philosophy of mathematics, natural-language semantics and pragmatics, game theory, American pragmatism, history of analytic philosophy, phenomenology and cognitive neurosciences, and history of ideas. His books include Signs of Logic: Peircean Themes on the Philosophy of Language, Games, and Communication (Springer Synthese Library, 2006), Game Theory and Linguistic Meaning (CRiSPI, Oxford: Elsevier Science, 2007), and Logic of the Future (Indiana University Press, to appear, 2015). His journal publications include papers in leading journals such as Synthese, Journal of the History of Ideas, Semiotica, Perspectives on Science, History and Philosophy of Logic, Linguistics and the Human Sciences, Studia Logica, Cognitio, History of Philosophy Quarterly, Notre Dame Journal for Formal Logic, and Pragmatics & Cognition.
His research has been cited 967 times, 60 times per year, 16 years, h-index 16 (Publish or Perish, 12/2014).
Currently Pietarinen is running projects on diagrammatic logic, Peirce’s philosophy, study of systematic history of pragmatism in relation to early analytic philosophy, and the nature and development of diagrammatic logics in reasoning and cognition.
Research highlights since 2001 are summarised here in two sections, first from 2001-2011 and second from 2011 to date. The number refers to the chronological list of publications currently at http://www.helsinki.fi/~pietarin/publications/publications.html:
• Pietarinen (2001 (5)) solved the problem of ‘intentional identity’ in quantified modal IF logic.
• Pietarinen (2003, 2004 (32, 46)) brought epistemic logic and findings in cognitive neuroscience together.
• Pietarinen (2002 (25), 2004 (39)) “is the first to show the fundamental connections between extensive games of imperfect information, quantum logic and quantum mechanics”. “[He] is the first to have studied the similarities between the logic of games of imperfect information and quantum theory…There does not seem to be any evidence that von Neumann noticed a formal connection between these two kinds of ‘indeterminism’” ( J.Phil. Logic 2015).
• Pietarinen (2004 (51)): first to point out the depth and nature in which Grice’s theory relied on Peirce’s semiotics. The 2004 hypothesis that Grice was guided by the principles of Peirce’s semiotics in his formulation of the theory of meaning and the logic of conversation was proven correct in 2011 when it was found in the Grice archives that in 1950 Grice had held a lecture course entitled “Peirce’s General Theory of Signs” (Pietarinen & Bellucci 2014).
• Pietarinen (2005): New IF games of incomplete information studied further by others.
• Pietarinen (2006 (69)): The first explicit ‘Proof of Pragmaticism’, set up in the context of modern formal semantics (Pietarinen 2008 (88), 2011 (109), transl. to Portuguese)
• Pietarinen (2009 (93)) Biographical Entry in The International Directory of Logicians (London: College Publ.), among the three youngest logicians among over 200 entries.
Highlights from 2011-2014 are detailed below together with the complete list of publications from 2011-2014 (publication numbers 109-156).
Summary of Research Activities, 2011-2014, grouped in the following six categories
1. Logic: Landmark studies in the diagrammatic logic and logic of existential graphs, their philosophy, logic, analyticity, historical development and the future prospects (Pietarinen 156, 151, 149, 148, 147, 138, 135, 133, 132, 130, 122, 121, 110, the latter translated to Chinese and Russian)
2. Language & Cognition: The nature of iconicity in diagrams, metaphoric meaning and the logic of images, and the prospects for future iconic communication (Pietarinen 154, 150, 141, 134, 128, 119, 114, 111)
3. Pragmatics: Peirce’s unacknowledged influence on H.P. Grice and its consequences to contemporary pragmatics, neo-Gricean approaches, relevance theory and cognitive linguistics (Pietarinen 152, 143, 127)
4. Pragmatism: Proof of pragmaticism (117, 116, 109, translated to Portuguese); Pragmaticism in the historical and contemporary context, including its impact to the methodology of the social sciences, game theory, economics, organization theory, boundedly rational decision making and science bubbles (Pietarinen 159, 158, 140, 137, 126, 124, 118, 113, 112)
5. Philosophy of Science: New interpretations of interrogative abduction (retroduction), its place in Peirce’s logic of science, and its contemporary prevalence in the sciences and in reasoning about fundamental uncertainty (e.g., so-called ill-posed inverse problems) (Pietarinen 157, 144, 142, 123)
6. Philosophy of Mathematics: A scholastic-realist version of modal-structuralism (129) and a pragmatist criticism of fictionalism in philosophy of mathematics (139).
