Eri valdkondade teadusarvutuste vajadused kasvavad praegu drastiliselt seoses andmete mahu kasvu ja arvutiriistvara arenguga. Ajaga käib kaasas ka tarkvaratehnoloogia - pilvearvutuste lahenduste kaudu on paranenud arvutiressursi kättesaadavus ja rakendatavus, arenevad mobiilplatvormid, isikute ja teadusrühmade käsutuses olev infrastruktuur. Paralleelarvutid arenevad paljutuumaliste protsessorite ning arvutifarmide arendamise kaudu. Meie eesmärk on uurida, arendada ja katsetada eri tüüpi lahendusi ning teadusarvutuste kohaldatavust lähtudes tehnoloogia võimalustest ja rakenduste vajadustest. Rakenduste poolel keskendume bioinformaatikale, mille andmemahud on viimasel ajal kõige kiiremini kasvav trend (aastaks 2020 on kasvanud 1miljoni kordseks sekveneerimisandmete genereerimise võimekus, kuid arvutid vaid 64 korda kiiremad). Bioinformaatika keskmes on uued algoritmid mis suudavad andmeid hallata, töödelda, eri tüüpi andmeid integreerida ja masinõppe ja andmekaeva meetodeid rakendada.
Science has entered data and computation rich era. Drivers for this are novel technologies in data generation across many disciplines, as well as increasing compute power. In the current research theme we will investigate this change from the point of view of both the scientific computing middleware as well as the application domain of biological data integration and analysis. Computing platforms are moving to the cloud based solutions, both public as well as private. This is driven by cheaper commodity hardware and massive parallelisation requiring novel software paradigms and solutions. The bioinformatics, on the other hand, is driven by heterogeneous complex data acquisition to unravel biological processes and genetic/genomic basis of diseases. We will continue research on data integration and mining of gene expression, epigenetic, short RNA, metabolomic, proteomic and genetic/gene variation data.
