The aim of this proposal is to contribute to the field of supramolecular analytical chemistry by introducing receptor molecules that are able to bind certain highly polar (anionic) and difficult-to-determine ionic analytes, such as glyphosate, glyphosinate, AMPA, citrate, lactate, malate, glutarate, tartrate, etc. The work will combine computational design using the COSMO-RS approach, synthesis, characterization and immobilization of molecular receptors for selected target analytes. The developed receptors will either (a) be directly used for sensing the analytes in solution (using photometric and/or fluorescence detection) or (b) be immobilized to stationary supports and be used for selective separation/concentration of analytes of interest for subsequent analysis by LC and LC-MS. Which of these directions (or both) to follow, will be decided in the course of the work. The outcomes of the work are expected to be widely applicable for determination of these important analytes. The novelty of this project is in the choice of analytes (to the best of our knowledge no synthetic molecular receptors have been developed for such anions having several ionic centers) and in the multidisciplinarity of the approach, starting from initial computational design and then proceeding to synthesis and eventually analytical applications.
