RHINE (www.rhine.nu) is a follow up study of subjects who participated in the ECRHS I stage 1 from the seven Northern European centres: Reykjavik in Iceland, Bergen in Norway, Umeå, Uppsala and Göteborg in Sweden, Aarhus in Denmark and Tartu in Estonia. In 1999-2001 the eligible subjects were sent a postal questionnaire including questions on respiratory health, smoking, diet, childhood environment, sleep, hormonal status in women, co-morbidity, in-door environment and occupation. With-in RHINE III follow up a new postal questionnaire will be sent out to them that is in principle similar to that used in 1999-2000, but contains supplementary information relating COPD diagnosis, central obesity as measured with the supplied tape, myocardial infarction, stroke, inflammatory bowel disease and physical activity. With-in the current project (Exposure assessment for the RHINE-population in Tartu) this data will be linked to residential addresses using air pollution data. For that the NOx levels in Tartu during 19 years of follow-up (1993 to 2011) will be modeled with dispersion model AEROPOL. All participants will be geocoded that enables to link them with air pollution levels. Moreover the distance to the major road will be found.
