Extensive human impact has driven our planet to a major crisis. Climate change, overusing of resources, extensive use of chemicals in food industry, water scarcity, pollution of environment ? these are all topics need quick and drastic measures. The general goal of this proposal is to reduce the human impact in agricultural sector by developing sustainable solutions. Chemical ecology comprises research in chemical communication among organisms, which can be used for modifying pest insect behavior in order to protect crops. The aim of this application is to strengthen the ongoing research in chemical ecology in Estonia by bringing the network comprising several universities in Sweden and Norway in closer contact to researchers in Estonia. Chemical ecology research has a long tradition in Estonia especially the expertise in synthesis combined with dispenser development for moth pheromones, but, today only one senior chemist is active in this research field. Based on good expertise available in the field of organic synthesis I am planning to create a research group at the Institute of Technology, University of Tartu. In this application I present my view of how to combine the knowledge in synthesis (University of Tartu) with research at Estonian Agricultural University and ongoing and new research projects in Sweden and Norway. My aim is to support the synthetic and analytical parts of chemical ecology in Estonia, to enhance and visualize the present competence for utilization in the society of chemical ecology. The final goal is a research platform in chemical ecology, internationally recognized and with a broad synthetic and analytical base in cooperation with a number of scientists. Synthesis of ultrapure bioactive compounds is the bottle neck, in performing tests in the field and in the laboratory, for developing sustainable agriculture and forestry.
