Globaalne kliimamuutus tähendab paljude keskkonnafaktorite muutumist korraga ja erinevate abiootiliste ja biootiliste stresside ja stressifaktorite koosmõjude sagenemist. Globaalsete muutuste mõju kvantitatiivne hindamine taimestikule on raskendatud, kuna taimede stressitundlikkus, tolerants ja kohenemisvõime varieerub suuresti ning koosesinevate stresside mõju taimedele on tihti interaktiivne. Teema põhiküsimusteks on kuidas stressitundlikkust iseloomustavad tunnused varieeruvad liikide vahel ja kuidas taimed kohanevad koosesinevate ja järjestikuste erineva tugevusega stressidega. Stressivastust võtmetähtsusega biootilistele ja abiootilistele stressidele mõõdetakse lenduvate signaalmolekulide (VOC) emissiooni kaudu. Antud töö tulemused aitavad mõista, kuidas taimestik kohaneb globaalselt muutuva kliimaga ning võimaldavad luua uudseid stressimudeleid.
Global change leads to modification of multiple environmental drivers simultaneous and is expected to result in enhanced frequency and severity of environmental and biotic stresses, and stress interactions worldwide. Plants largely differ in stress responsiveness, tolerance and acclimation capacity, and multiple stresses often interactively alter plant performance, vastly complicating prediction of global change effects on vegetation. The main questions explored are how suites of stress-related traits vary across species and how plants acclimate to interacting and sequential stresses of varying severity. Responsiveness to key abiotic and biotic stresses will be monitored by elicitation of emissions of volatile signal molecules. The expected results contribute towards understanding plant acclimation to global change and development of stress response models.
