The project will explore the transformation in patriarchal structure in a village in Bangladesh following overseas migration of men leaving the women counterparts in the village. In doing so, the study will explore the continuity and changes in the practices of traditional gender roles and the development of agency among women in a patriarchal Muslim society. To explore these practices, it will look into the perspective of both men and women and investigate whether the practices are sustainable or temporal for a period when the husbands are abroad and what happens to the practices of agency of women when their husbands return permanently from abroad. Thus the study expects to contribute to innovative research through its focus on transformation in patriarchy resulted from migration which has not yet been highlighted in other studies particularly in Bangladesh. Sustainability: The result of the project will be published in a PhD thesis and in various articles in international journals listed in ETIS. Additionally, the result will be presented and discussed at scientific international conferences and seminars. This research will contribute to the field of Asian Studies which has been identified by the pro-rector as one of the unique areas of interest linked to the institutional development of Tallinn University. This project is an interdisciplinary study related to anthropology, Asian Studies, gender studies, migration and development.
