Optical fluoride nanoceramics. A CaF2 natural optical ceramics (Suran Deposit, South Ural, Russia) is investigated as a model object. According to electron scanning and atomic force microscopy data it is identified as nanoceramics. The technology of precursor preparation as well as technology of manufacturing of transparent ceramics with the level of optical losses about 10-2 - 10-3 cm-1 at one micron wave length is developed. It is sufficient for the development of photonic devices of different types. Fluoride ceramics has improved mechanical properties comparing to the single crystals. The ceramics is lack of cleavage, a fracture toughness is 3-6 times higher than for single crystals. A 10-15% increase of microhardness is observed. The thermal conductivity is practically the same as for single crystal. A small difference in spectroscopic properties between fluoride ceramics and single crystal of same composition is observed.
