English, An experimental study and numerical simulation of the amplification of femtosecond pulses on the basis of stimulated Raman scattering in compressed hydrogen were made. For pumping by 350-fs pulses with energy of 100 mu J of the second harmonic of radiation of a titanium-doped sapphire laser, the small-signal gain for 465-nm Stokes radiation separated out from the spectral continuum reached 10(10). The results of numerical calculations quantitatively and qualitatively agree with the experimental results for the pump energies lying below the threshold of spectral-continuum generation.
