The development of computers has increased the importance of mathematics in applications. Learning mathematics requires a lot of calculations and other technical work. This could be done with help of calculators, and therefore, enabling to concentrate on the problem solving. For this purpose, we have used the graphing calculator TI-89 by Texas Instrument. TI-89 is a special purpose programmable microcomputer for mathematical tasks. Compared with other graphing calculators (including other versions of TI), TI-89 has several features which make it more suitable in the mathematics teaching context. The main difference from most other graphing calculators is its computer algebra system, which allows symbolic manipulation of algebraic expressions. Secondly, the programming language of TI-89 is simpler and much easier to learn than that of TI-92. Finally, TI-89 is supported by the simulation software Virtual TI, which allows to prepare and show presentations using PC and data projector. This makes possible to make classroom demonstrations about practical usage of the calculator.
